Hargreaves Lansdown CGT: upload your Transaction Summary, get an HMRC report

product-updates

Hargreaves Lansdown gives you a transaction list, not a gain — disposals are yours to report on SA108. Our CGT Calculator now reads both HL CSV exports, the Tax centre transaction summary and the Portfolio history download, and produces an HMRC-style report.

The dealing charge is never printed, so we derive it

Other tools want a contract-note PDF per trade for this number. The CSV alone carries it, implicitly:

Quantity × Unit cost (p)
300 × 750.00p = £2,250.00
Value (£) on the row
£2,261.95
Dealing charge
£11.95
allowable, s.38

The CSV never states the charge. The gap between quantity × unit cost and the cash Value recovers HL’s published £11.95 and £6.95 share-dealing charges exactly — on a buy it joins the cost, on a sale it comes off the proceeds. Funds deal free, so their gap is zero.

What each row becomes

Row in the exportWhat it becomes
B… / S… referenceAcquisitions and disposals, matched under the same-day, 30-day and Section 104 rules
Treasury 0.125% 31/01/2028 GiltCGT-exempt under TCGA 1992 s115 — resolved against the DMO register on an exact coupon and redemption-date match
RDP CRGilt redeemed at maturity — exempt exactly as a sale is, booked as cash
InterestInterest income
DRI… referenceA transfer from your paired income account — not the dividend itself, so it is not booked as income
MANAGE FEE, TRANSFER, FPC…Cash movements — excluded; the platform fee is not an allowable CGT cost

Everything is GBP with prices quoted in pence — no FX is involved. One catch: HL rows carry no ISIN, no SEDOL and no ticker, so a holding is only its printed name, e.g. iShares Core FTSE 100 UCITS ETF GBP (Dist). If HL renames one between two exports, the two halves pool separately — give both the same name on the edit page and they pool again. The gilt match is why Vanguard UK Inflation Linked Gilt Index Accumulation stays taxable: s115 exempts the gilt, not units in a fund that owns them.

How to export your HL CSV

  1. Log in to Hargreaves Lansdown and open My accounts, then Tax centre.
  2. Pick the account and the tax year, open the transaction summary, and take the CSV link at the foot of the report.
  3. Or open the Portfolio history tab, set the date range and download — HL saves that one as portfolio-summary.csv.

Either file works: both carry the same seven columns — Trade date, Settle date, Reference, Description, Unit cost (p), Quantity, Value (£).

What the export cannot tell you

  • Dividends. HL splits a capital account (01C…) from an income account (01I…), and a capital-account export only shows the transfers between them.
  • Corporate actions. A split or a merger needs entering by hand.
  • The account type. An ISA export is indistinguishable from a Fund & Share one, and gains inside an ISA are not chargeable — the calculator warns rather than guesses.
