FAQ
Which Charles Schwab export do I upload for UK tax?
+
The transaction history CSV: Accounts, then History, filter All Transactions, then Export. Set the date range from your first buy, not from 6 April: the cost of the shares you sell comes from your whole buying history (HS284).
I have RSUs. Which Schwab files do I need?
+
Two, uploaded together: the brokerage CSV and the Equity Awards CSV from the Equity Award Center. The awards file carries the market value at vest, which is your cost for Capital Gains Tax; the brokerage file only says that shares arrived. Adding the awards file later, on the edit page, does not link them.
Is the NRA Tax Adj on my dividends lost?
+
No. Schwab books a US dividend as two rows, the gross Qualified Dividend and the 15% treaty withholding. HMRC taxes the gross and gives credit for the tax paid, so the report pairs the rows and keeps the withholding for Foreign Tax Credit Relief.
How are Schwab options taxed in the UK?
+
Each contract series is its own asset. Writing an option is a disposal on the day you write it (CG12312); Expired rows close the series with the premium kept, and on Assigned the premium goes into the share cost or the proceeds (CG12313).
Are US Treasury bills bought through Schwab a capital gain?
+
No. A T-bill held to maturity is a deeply discounted security, so the discount is income, not a gain (SAIM3010). It is recognised from its CUSIP and booked as foreign interest.
Which exchange rate is used for my USD trades?
+
HMRC’s monthly exchange rate for the month of the trade, applied to every leg in dollars: the buy, the sale, the premium and the dividend. Open a sale in the report to see the rate it used.
I moved over from TD Ameritrade. Is that history read?
+
Yes. The rows Schwab carried across, Sell Short, Buy to Cover and Foreign Tax Reclaim among them, are read, and the Journaled Shares and Internal Transfer pair of the move itself is skipped so the pool is not broken.
Can I combine Schwab with another broker?
+
Yes. Upload the files from each broker together. Shares of the same company are one pool however many brokers hold them, so a sale is costed against all of them.
