FAQ
How is crypto taxed in the UK?
+
As property, not currency, so Capital Gains Tax applies to every disposal (CRYPTO22200). Selling for pounds, swapping one coin for another and spending crypto are all disposals. Buying and holding, or moving coins between your own wallets, is not. Gains above the £3,000 annual exempt amount are taxed at 18% or 24% since 30 October 2024, depending on your Income Tax band.
Is swapping one crypto for another taxable?
+
Yes. A BTC to ETH swap is a disposal of the BTC at its sterling value and a purchase of the ETH for the same amount (CRYPTO22100). The report splits each Convert or crypto pair into a sell leg and a buy leg, and both go through the matching rules against their own coin’s pool.
Do the share matching rules apply to crypto?
+
Yes. A disposal is matched first against tokens bought the same day, then against tokens bought in the next 30 days, and the rest against the Section 104 pool at average cost (CRYPTO22200). Each coin is its own pool, and HMRC pools by token, not by exchange: ETH on Coinbase and ETH on Binance are one pool.
How are trades priced in USD or USDT converted to pounds?
+
A GBP pair needs no conversion. A pair quoted in USD, EUR or another fiat currency is converted at the HMRC monthly exchange rate for the month of the trade. USDT, USDC, BUSD, DAI and the other dollar stablecoins are treated as dollars for the conversion, but they are still tokens: a stablecoin you hold is a pool, and swapping into or out of one is a disposal.
What about a crypto-to-crypto pair like ETH/BTC?
+
The quote coin is priced in sterling from daily market data, and the trade’s value follows from it. If no price is available for a date, the row is listed under a Missing prices warning and the sterling value can be typed in on the edit page; the report recalculates when it is saved.
How are staking rewards and airdrops taxed?
+
Staking, Earn and interest rewards are miscellaneous income at their sterling value on the day received (CRYPTO21200), listed for SA100 box 17 and added to the coin’s pool at that value so the same pounds are not taxed twice. Unsolicited airdrops are not income on receipt (CRYPTO22500): they join the pool at nil cost, so the whole value is a gain when they are eventually sold.
Where do exchange fees go?
+
A fee in the quote currency comes off the proceeds of a sale or joins the cost of a buy (CRYPTO22150). A fee taken in the coin you are trading means more of it left your wallet, so the disposed quantity is increased. A fee in a third coin, usually BNB, is a small disposal of that coin in its own right.
Which exchanges are supported?
+
Coinbase (the Transaction history CSV, all four header layouts) and Binance (Trade History and Statements CSVs). Upload them together with any of the stockbrokers and get one report. Binance Futures and Margin rows are skipped with a warning; other exchanges and self-custody wallets are not read yet.
Is the crypto calculator free?
+
The free tier reports up to 10 disposals a tax year, stocks and crypto combined, with the SA108 figures. The Investor tier, £12.95 a year, unlocks unlimited disposals, the full per-trade report and the PDF, 25 reports a year.
Where does crypto go on my Self Assessment return?
+
The cryptoassets section of SA108, introduced for 2024/25: box 13.1 number of disposals, 13.2 proceeds, 13.3 allowable costs, 13.4 gains before losses and 13.5 losses, plus SA100 box 17 for staking income. An earlier year’s SA108 has no cryptoassets section; the same figures go into its Other property, assets and gains boxes.
