FAQ

Which HL file do I upload for UK tax?

+

The Transaction summary CSV from the Tax centre, or the Portfolio history download: both carry the same seven columns and are read the same way. Download the capital account (number starting 01C); the 01I income account has no share trades. Start the export from your first buy, not from 6 April: the cost of what you sell comes from your whole buying history (HS284).

Do I pay Capital Gains Tax on HL?

+

In a Fund and Share Account, yes, once the tax year’s gains go above the £3,000 annual exempt amount. Gains inside a Stocks and Shares ISA, Lifetime ISA or SIPP are tax-free. The file never says which account it came from, so every report carries a note about it, and a row that names an ISA or SIPP turns the note into a warning.

Where is the £11.95 dealing charge?

+

In the gap. The file has no fee column, so the charge is the difference between Quantity × Unit cost and Value (£): the £11.95 dealing fee on a share deal, with any stamp duty or PTM levy on a buy folded into the same figure. A fund deal has no gap and no charge. If the gap is larger than a plausible charge, the report says so in a warning and the gain is left as HL priced it.

Is the MANAGE FEE allowable?

+

No. The platform fee is a cost of holding the account, not of buying or selling a share, so it is booked as cash and never enters a pool.

The file has no ISIN or ticker. How are holdings matched?

+

By the name HL prints. Every row with the same name goes into one Section 104 pool. If HL renames a holding between two exports, the two names make two pools; give them the same name on the edit page to merge them.

Are gilts exempt?

+

Yes. A gilt is recognised by its name against the DMO register, and its gain or loss is kept out of the total under TCGA 1992 s115 and listed in the report notes. A gilt fund is not a gilt and is taxed like any other fund. A redemption (RDP CR) is booked as cash.

Trade date or settle date?

+

Trade date. HMRC dates a disposal to the day the contract is made (TCGA 1992 s28), so the settle date column is ignored. A sale traded on 3 April and settled on 8 April belongs to the year that ends on 5 April.

Are dividends and reinvested income handled?

+

Dividends are paid into the income account, which is a separate export the reader does not take. A DRI… row in the capital account is a transfer from that account, not a dividend. Where income is reinvested, the Income Re-Investment row is paired with the same-day buy, so the units are in your pool at their cost.

What about the INTEREST rows?

+

Interest on uninvested cash is UK savings interest, listed for the SA100 against your personal savings allowance (£166.89 in the example). It is not a capital gain.

I hold an Irish ETF on HL. Is excess reportable income handled?

+

Not automatically. ERI is matched on the fund’s ISIN, which the HL file does not carry. Add the ISIN to the holding on the edit page and the reported income is taxed as income and added to the pool cost (see the ERI chapter).

Can I combine HL with another broker?

+

Yes. Upload the files together. A holding is one pool when its name is the same in both, so an HL fund and the same fund elsewhere may need the same name on the edit page; a share with a ticker at the other broker stays a separate pool and is warned about. The 30-day rule runs across brokers.

Do I need last year’s export too?

+

If you still hold something you bought before this tax year, yes. Its cost is in the earlier rows, and without them the first sale of the holding has nothing to match. Set the date range of one export to cover everything, from the first buy to today.
