FAQ

How are options taxed in the UK?

+

As chargeable assets for Capital Gains Tax. Each contract series is its own asset, with same-day, 30-day and Section 104 matching. Writing an option is a disposal on the day you write it (CG12312). On exercise or assignment the premium moves into the share cost or proceeds (CG12313).

When is the premium from a written option taxed?

+

On the day you write it. A later buy-back reduces that gain (CG55545), so it stays in the tax year of the grant.

What if I write an option in March and buy it back after 5 April?

+

The buy-back cost goes against the earlier year. We book it there and flag the option, because a return you already filed for that year needs amending.

How are expired, exercised and cash-settled options taxed?

+

A written option that expires keeps its premium as a gain on the day you wrote it. A bought option that expires is a loss on the expiry date (CG55415). Exercise a bought call and the premium is added to the share cost (CG12314). A cash-settled option such as SPX is a disposal: the cash is the proceeds and the premium is the cost (CG12322).

Does the 30-day rule apply to options?

+

Yes, per series. Sell a contract you bought and buy the same underlying, strike, expiry and type again within 30 days, and the two are matched. A different strike or expiry is a different asset. Buying back an option you wrote is not the 30-day rule: that cost always goes against the original grant.

How is the wheel strategy taxed in the UK?

+

An expired put is a gain on the day you wrote it. An assigned put cuts the share cost. An assigned covered call adds to the sale proceeds. Often the whole wheel is one share disposal.

Where do options go on my Self Assessment return?

+

SA108, “Other property, assets and gains”: disposals in box 14, proceeds in box 15, costs in box 16, gains in box 17, losses in box 19.

Which brokers are supported for options?

+

Interactive Brokers, Charles Schwab (including TD Ameritrade migrations) and Robinhood UK. Cash-settled index options are supported for Robinhood only.

Do you handle EMI, CSOP or SAYE share options?

+

No. Employee share schemes, futures and Fidelity options are not calculated.
