Vanguard UK CGT: upload your Client Transaction Listing, get an HMRC report
Vanguard Investor UK does not work out your Capital Gains Tax — a General Account disposal is yours to report on SA108. Our CGT Calculator now reads the Vanguard Client Transaction Listing, the Excel export from the Report generator, as it downloads.
One workbook in, one report out
The workbook has a tab per account plus a Summary sheet. Upload the whole file — there is no tab to pick.
One tab per account. The General Account produces the report; ISA, Junior ISA and SIPP are tax-free wrappers with nothing to declare, and the Summary sheet holds no transactions. Every skipped tab is named in the report notes.
What each row becomes
| Row in the export | What it becomes |
|---|---|
Bought / Sold | Acquisitions and disposals, matched under the same-day, 30-day and Section 104 rules |
DIV: <fund name> | Dividend income, in the tax year it was paid |
Cash Account Interest | Interest income |
Dealing fee £7.50 | Allowable cost of the trade it belongs to (TCGA 1992 s.38) |
Account Fee | Excluded — the cost of holding the account is not allowable |
Vanguard Investor UK is a GBP-only platform, so no FX is involved — with one exception below.
An accumulating ETF pays you nothing, and is still taxed
An accumulating share class keeps its income inside the fund, so nothing appears on your statement — but HMRC taxes that excess reportable income as if you had received it, and the same amount is added to your cost so it is not taxed again as a gain. Hold 250 shares of the FTSE All-World UCITS ETF Accumulating (VWRP, IE00BK5BQT80) on its reporting date:
| Step | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Holding on reporting date | 250 shares of VWRP on 30 Jun 2025 | 250 shares |
| ERI per share (published) | FTSE All-World UCITS ETF Acc | $2.2479179 |
| Total ERI | 250 × $2.2479179 | $561.98 |
| Convert at HMRC rate | $561.98 × 0.745601 | £419.01 |
| Report as dividend income | deemed received 30 Dec 2025 | £419.01 |
| Increase Section 104 cost | pool cost + £419.01 | £419.01 |
That is £419.01 of taxable income in a year the fund paid out nothing, applied automatically. A Vanguard export carries no ISIN, only a fund name, so we resolve the name against Vanguard’s published fund data; a name that does not resolve to exactly one ISIN gets a warning instead of a guess, and you can fill the figure in under Edit → Advanced → Custom ERI Entries.
How to export your Client Transaction Listing
- Sign in to Vanguard Investor UK and open Documents, then Report generator.
- Choose Client Transaction Listing, set the date range, and download the Excel file.
- Upload that
.xlsxas it downloaded.
Before a sheet is used, it is checked against itself: every cash row has to tie out to the running Balance column to the penny, and the tables have to match their own footers. A workbook that fails produces no figures — you are asked to save the account tab as a CSV and upload that instead.
What is not handled yet
- Corporate actions. A share class conversion or fund merger needs entering by hand.
- UK-domiciled accumulation funds. Notional distributions on the LifeStrategy range work differently from ERI and are not applied.
- Bond fund distributions. Interest under UK rules, but recorded as Vanguard labels it — review those rows.
